Mesothelioma Causation

The Risk
Beware of Asbestos

Is asbestos exposure deadly? … you decide.

Chrysotile Kills: A Killer by Any Other Name capitalized. chrysotile.htm vs. chrysotile_kills.htm

Chrysotile is a mineral of the serpentine group that crystallizes in thin, flexible fibers. Chrysotile has been the most commonly used type of asbestos. Chrysotile is often present in a wide variety of materials.

Asbestos Exposure Issues

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber that has been mined for centuries. Several different types of asbestos exist such as “white” or chrysotile asbestos, "brown" or amosite absestos, and “blue” or riebeckite asbestos. People are exposed to asbestos fibers through manmade products , sometimes unknowingly. After being exposed to asbestos, some may develop asbestos-related cancers sometimes up to 50 years afterwards.

Trades At Risk

Research on the incidence of asbestos-related disease among construction, shipyard , refinery and production workers by Dr. Kaye Kilburn (who screened active and retired union workers throughout the country from 1986 to 1989), revealed the following results.

SV40

SV40 is an abbreviation for Simian vacuolating virus 40 or Simian virus 40, a virus that is found in both monkeys and humans. Like other polyomaviruses, SV40 is a DNA virus that has the potential to cause tumors.

Early Detection
Biomarkers

A biomarker is any substance that can be measured biologically and is associated with disease, especially cancer. Doctors believe that biomarkers will help predict future patients at risk of developing cancer. Research into biomarkers continues to improve cancer screenings, early detection of disease, and more useful cancer therapies.

Dr. Harvey Pass

"We were able to use IPA's computational pathways analytics to develop network signatures from gene expression data and to identify a novel biomarker candidate for Mesothelioma," stated Dr. Harvey Pass , Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Chief, Division of Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Oncology at New York University.

Libby, Montana
Libby, Montana is a tragedy story. The mining company W. R. Grace long extracted vermiculite and tribulite asbestos to the detriment of its workers, who often did not follow proper safety protocol. These hard working men came home to their families with this silent killer on their clothes.

World Trade Center 9/11
When the towers of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York collapsed on September 11, 2001 , they released a cloud of hazardous material that included 2000 tons of asbestos .
